A paper cutting machine is a core investment for almost every print shop and copy centre. Choosing the right model from the start saves running costs and reduces the risk of bad cuts. Check these four things before you buy.
1. Decide on the cutting width
Measure the largest job you usually handle. A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm, so a 460 mm cutting width is already enough. If you often trim larger printed sheets, choose 490 mm or 530 mm so you do not need to cut twice.
- 460 mm — 4606Z
- 490 mm — 4908EP and HP4908
- 530 mm — 5310
2. Check the cutting height
Cutting height decides how thick a stack you can cut in one pass. 60 mm is enough for stacks of receipt books and thin to medium books. If you regularly cut thick stacks, choose a model with an 80 mm cutting height such as the 4908EP and HP4908. The taller the stack that fits, the fewer cutting passes per order.
3. Look at the safety system
A paper cutter works with a very sharp blade. Ask whether the machine has a safety sensor that stops the blade when an object is in the cutting area, and ask to see it work during a demonstration. This matters most when several operators share the machine.
4. Semi-automatic or hydraulic?
- Semi-automatic — the operator sets the cut size and the cutting itself runs automatically. Economical for small to medium volumes. Example: 4606Z.
- Hydraulic — the clamp and blade are driven by hydraulic pressure, so the operator needs less effort and pressure stays consistent on every cut. Examples: HP4908 and 5310.

A touchscreen speeds up repeat work
The HP4908 has a 7-inch touchscreen and the 5310 has a 10-inch touchscreen. A screen makes it easier to save and recall frequently used cut sizes, so new operators get up to speed faster.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 460 mm cutting width enough for A3 paper?
Yes. A3 paper measures 297 × 420 mm, so its longest side (420 mm) is still under 460 mm. For printed sheets larger than A3, choose a 490 mm or 530 mm model.
What is the narrowest cut the machines can make?
The 4606Z and 4908EP can make narrow cuts down to 40 mm. For other models, check the specifications on the product page.
Is a semi-automatic machine enough for daily use?
It is enough for small to medium volumes. When volume and stack height grow, or operators change often, a hydraulic model is more comfortable and consistent.
